Developing Countries

  1. The context is based on Donald Trump complaining that US shouldn’t give funding to self-claimed developing countries like India and China. He said US is also a developing country because it’s developing, just faster, and I feel this idea is very funny.

  2. From [the WTO’s website](https://www.wto.org/english/tratop_e/devel_e/d1who_e.htm):

    > There are no WTO definitions of “developed” and “developing” countries. Members announce for themselves whether they are “developed” or “developing” countries. However, other members can challenge the decision of a member to make use of provisions available to developing countries.

Yeah China is mainly on this list because when it joined it was ~~a europoor wait they’re not european I’ll just cross it out and hope nobody sees it ~~poor, and everybody said “yeah you’re poor you get some privileges”. Now that they have “poor but not poor” status in that the coastal provinces have developed well but not the interior, it’s becoming pretty complicated…

Take, for example, [the UNDP in China’s “about us” page](http://www.cn.undp.org/content/china/en/home/about-us.html) and [the same page for the UNDP in Washington](http://www.us.undp.org/content/washington/en/home/about-us.html). China is simultaneously developing with the UNDP’s help and helping the UNDP develop other countries (also I find it kind of funny and kind of telling that the US page makes sure to point out that they’re helping areas with strategic interests to the US but that’s beside the point). Poor, and not poor. Of course the aid [the US provides](http://www.undp.org/content/undp/en/home/funding/core-donors/UnitedStates.html) and the aid [China provides](http://www.undp.org/content/undp/en/home/funding/core-donors/China.html) are very different in scale and location, such as China sending aid to China, and, being a developing country, China receives aid from other countries…

    Pretty weird status.
