  1. Interesting historical footnote: while US administration of Japan ended in 1952, Okinawa (then the Kingdom of Ryukyu) remained under American administration until 1972.

    Because of Okinawa’s unclear status, and out of a fear that US administration would become permanent, the local population made a concerted effort to Japanify themselves to put pressures Tokyo to end the occupation.

    Unfortunately this lead to a great loss of local language and culture, but ultimately worked in (re)establishing Okinawa as part of Japan. Though of course their main island still has a US military base or ~~2~~ 15.

  2. Plus storage of agent orange which the Pentagon really doesn’t like talking about even though Operation Red Hat isn’t exactly under lock and key. Along with exposing service personnel during Project 112.

    Jon Mitchell’s work on this subject is well worth the read about the impact of the US on Okinawa.
