    This was my entry for the [Aviation Alteration]( contest. I apologise for the crappy generic punchline.


    So, in 1709, the ~~Brazilian~~ Portuguese priest [Bartolomeu de Gusmão]( petitioned the Portuguese king for his favour in order to design and build an airship. While we do know he did successfully experiment with hot-air balloons, the airship was _probably_ never built, in spite of rumours that it flew at least once.

    Also, it definitely looked nothing like the most popular [drawing]( of it, which was apparently made to mislead spies and sate the curiosity of the nosy masses alike. This drawing was the origin of the nickname of said airship – “passarola”, meaning something like “ungraceful bird”.
