This was my entry for the [Aviation Alteration](https://www.reddit.com/r/polandball/comments/94b82w/challenge_reveal_aviation_alteration/) contest. I apologise for the crappy generic punchline.

So, in 1709, the ~~Brazilian~~ Portuguese priest [Bartolomeu de Gusmão](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartolomeu_de_Gusm%C3%A3o#Airship) petitioned the Portuguese king for his favour in order to design and build an airship. While we do know he did successfully experiment with hot-air balloons, the airship was _probably_ never built, in spite of rumours that it flew at least once.

Also, it definitely looked nothing like the most popular [drawing](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c9/Passarola-bartolomeu-de-gusmao.jpg) of it, which was apparently made to mislead spies and sate the curiosity of the nosy masses alike. This drawing was the origin of the nickname of said airship – “passarola”, meaning something like “ungraceful bird”.
